As an adult heading back to school, you probably do not have the luxury of being a full time student. Rather, the odds are that you will have to hold down a job while you go back to school. Whether the job is full time or part time, trying to make ends meet while moving forward with your education can be quite a struggle. With these simple tips, however, you can greatly improve your chances of successfully holding down a job and going to school at the same time.

Tip #1: Work with Your Employer

Before you begin pursuing your education, it would be a good idea to discuss your plans with your current employer. Depending upon your employer, you might actually be able to receive assistance with paying for your education. In addition, the employer may be willing to adjust your schedule in order to help you create a schedule that will allow you to attend school while still working. If you are pursuing your education in order to help you become a better employee for the company you currently work for, you will likely find the company to be particularly accommodating.

Tip #2: Take it Slow

Although you will be excited to finish your education and will want to get through it as quickly as possible, it is essential that you avoid taking on more than you can handle. If you take too many classes at one time, you will quickly burn out and may give up on your quest to earn a degree. You might want to take just one class at first. This way, you can see how well you can handle taking a class while still working. If you find that you can handle one class without a problem, you might then try to add on another. Remember, it is better to take it slow than to try to rush through your education and give up before you are finished.

Tip #3: Consider Online Courses

If you are trying to go to school while you work, scheduling will likely be your biggest problem. After all, classes are offered only at certain times and these times may conflict with your work hours. While campuses are increasingly offering courses in the evening, even these hours may be difficult for you to follow while still going to work. For this reason, many people that work while going to school choose to take online courses. When you take online courses, you have far more flexibility with your schedule and you can squeeze in time for your studies around your work schedule.

Tip #4: Make Time for You

When going to school while working, your life can seem like a whirlwind filled with demands being made on your time. Therefore, when you create a schedule for yourself, be certain to schedule in time for yourself. Failing to meet your personal needs will quickly lead to burn out. Make sure to set time aside so you can unwind, rest, or visit with your friends.

Going to school while working can be quite stressful. Although there is no surefire way to help alleviate all of the stress you will experience, following these tips will greatly reduce your anxiety and will make your educational experience far more enjoyable.
