Making the decision to go back to college is exciting yet overwhelming at the same time. After all, if it has been awhile since you have been in school, the idea of sitting in a classroom once again can be a bit nerve-wracking. Of course, getting prepared for your first day in college requires taking a few steps as well, and this can also be frightening if you are not sure what to do.
What College Should You Pick?
Once you decide to go back to college, your first major decision will be determining where you will go for your schooling. First, you will have to choose between online universities and brick and mortar universities. There are pros and cons to each, so you will need to assess your own learning style and lifestyle in order to determine which is best for you.
Many adults going back to college prefer to enroll an online college because these classes are more convenient to attend than the traditional college campus. If you have a family or are working while going to college, attending an online school can make it easier to juggle all of your commitments because the classes do not meet at one set time. On the other hand, if you are interested in the social options available at brick and mortar universities, attending an online college might not be the right choice for you. Be honest with yourself about your needs and you will be certain to make the right decision.
What in the World is an Admission Essay?
In order to get accepted into a college, whether you are attending an online university or brick and mortar college, you will have to complete an extensive admissions process. Try not to get too worked up over completing the application and writing the admission essay if one is required. The purpose of the admission essay is simply to help the admissions board get a better idea of who you are. When you write the admission essay, relax and write a story about a special moment in your life. If you let the real you shine through, your admission essay will surely be a hit.
What About School Supplies?
If you are a parent, you have likely engaged in back to school shopping on numerous occasions. Now that you have decided to go back to college, it is time for you to go back to school shopping for yourself!
Depending on your major and the college you will be attending, the supplies you will need will vary. Whether you are attending an online college or not, you should purchase a computer in order to help you with your studies. Although brick and mortar institutions generally have computer labs that are available to students, having your own computer will make it easier for you to complete assignments for your classes from the comfort of home.
You will also need to purchase software for the computer that you buy for school. If you are attending classes online, you will need to check with the college in order to learn more about special software programs that might be needed for the classes you will be taking. In addition, you will likely need to purchase books for your classes. In order to save yourself some money, look into purchasing these books used and selling them when the course is completed.
Going back to school is an exciting time in your life. Make sure to take the time to select the best school for your needs and to gather the proper supplies and it will surely be a positive experience!
